Electrotherapy & Dry Needling

What is electrotherapy?

Electrotherapy uses a gentle electrical current to stimulate muscles or nerves. It can be delivered in different ways - via dry needles (the technique we offer) or through adhesive pads placed on the skin (commonly known as TENS). When used with dry needling, the stimulation is delivered directly into the affected muscle, allowing treatment of deeper tissues.

How can it help?

When muscles become overloaded, injured, or remain tight for prolonged periods, they can develop a cycle of tension, reduced movement, and discomfort. In some cases, this may also contribute to irritation of nearby nerves or restricted joint movement.

As part of a comprehensive treatment plan, electrotherapy can help to:

  • Reduce muscle tension by encouraging muscles to contract and relax, helping them return to a more normal resting state.

  • Relieve pain by stimulating the nervous system and influencing the way pain signals are processed.

  • Improve muscle activation and function, particularly when muscle inhibition or altered nerve function is contributing to symptoms.

  • Support rehabilitation by complementing hands-on treatment and targeted exercise.

Who might benefit?

Electrotherapy may be considered for people experiencing:

  • Persistent muscle tightness

  • Sports or exercise-related muscle soreness

  • Neck or back pain

  • Sciatica

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Other musculoskeletal conditions where muscle dysfunction or nerve irritation is contributing to symptoms

Every person is different, so a thorough assessment is essential to determine whether this treatment is appropriate for your condition.

Is electrotherapy right for you?

At our clinic, electrotherapy via dry needles can be incorporated into your osteopathic treatment when clinically appropriate. It is one of many tools we use alongside hands-on treatment, exercise rehabilitation, and education to help you move more comfortably and recover more effectively.

If you're struggling with ongoing pain, muscle tightness, or nerve-related symptoms, book an appointment with Dr Mimi for a comprehensive assessment. She’ll determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and discuss whether electrotherapy could be a beneficial part of your treatment plan.

Dr Mimi Ferrer has advanced training in dry needling and electrotherapy.
